Victor Brice Allsup was born on July 28, 1934, in Macon, MS to H. Brice and Dorothea Shaul Allsup. Vic graduated from Macon High School in 1952 where he had starred in football and basketball while milking cows and doing chores before and after school as well as working at local hardware stores on the weekends. He was active in the 4H and FFA programs in high school where he won many red and blue ribbons and also placed highly at the National Dairy Contest in judging cattle and dairy products. He attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN. for a time before transferring to Mississippi State University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1956 with BS in Dairy Science having received the highest GPA in Dairy Science at MSU at the time. While at MSU, Vic hitch-hiked to and from school in Starkville. Vic was very active in college life, being a member of Alpha Zeta, the college choir, and was the treasurer for his class and for the Dairy Club. He was on the Dairy Cattle Judging Team which placed second in the Nation and he also received the Danforth Fellowship and the Borden and Purina scholarships. Vic was on the President’s List for all four semesters and was listed in Who’s Who at MSU. He declined a Rhodes Scholarship in preference to giving time and attention to building up his family’s farm. Vic was active at Starkville Church of Christ on Wednesday nights where he taught classes and led the singing. Vic served with the US Army after he had scored the highest test score on the Military Aptitude test and could have served overseas, but declined and served the meat buyer for all the armed services from 1957-59. Vic returned to the family farm after his term of service and in 1972 was chosen both as Noxubee County’s Outstanding Young Dairyman by Dairymen, Inc. and as Mississippi’s Outstanding Dairyman. He represented the State of Mississippi at the annual convention of the National Milk Producer’s Assn. He also advanced the dairy farming progress in Noxubee County by building the first free-stall barn in the county. He also invented the “Cow Commode’, which was a flush system for the cleaning of dairy barns that utilized a concrete mixer drum. He took care of all the varied aspects of being a quality milk producer, including doing all his own construction and repairs, electrical work, mixing his own dairy ration, and even most of the veterinary needs of the farm. In 1959, he trained in artificial insemination of cattle at the American Breeder’s Association so that he could enhance his and other breeder’s dairy herds. Vic worked for one year for the National Federation of Independent Business while still milking three mornings a week before going on the road and also operating a water well drilling operation. His philosophy on life in general was that “More people rust out than wear out. When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. Vic married the love of his life, Mary Horne, in 1959 and together they reared three children, including one who was severely brain-injured from birth. Their experience in doing this enabled them to do valuable volunteer work for others with disabilities. He was a member of Macon Church of Christ since his teens and had served as a teacher, song-leader, and sometime preacher. He had been involved in the Mississippi Farm Bureau and had been President of the Noxubee County Young Dairymen and also President of the Board of Directors of Central Academy in Macon.
