Born on November 10,1940 to the late Hugh Lamar and Mary Alice Dugan Combs in Electric Mills, MS. Pop was a lifetime resident of Shuqualak, MS. Pop was in a very serious accident when he was four years old that left him paralyzed on his left side and for six months after the accident, he was unconscious. After he recuperated as best he could he attended Noxubee High School. In 1953, Pop joined the Shuqualak Baptist Church at age thirteen. That same day his father died unexpectedly. His mom was left with four boys to raise alone. Growing up, Pop and his brothers helped their mother in her restaurant and Pop would sell peanuts in front of the store fronts and at Texaco. Pop walked everywhere that he went until he was physically not able to anymore. He was the first person at church each Sunday. He would open the doors, turn on the lights, light the heaters and fold the bulletins without anyone’s help because that was his job! Pop rang the church bell to let everyone know it was time for church and would pass out the bulletins to everyone when they arrived for church. In 2006, he was designated the “Ambassador of Good Will and Encouragement” by the church members. From 1955 until 2006, Pop missed only three or four services. He enjoyed going to other churches in Shuqualak when his church was not worshipping. The community members and church congregation made sure that Pop had a golf cart to get around on once he became unable to walk.
Pop’s most enjoyable favorite pastime was talking about Shuqualak to anyone who would listen. He was known by his family as a Christian man, Pop enjoyed watching wrestling and westerns and doing crossword puzzles.
Pop is preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers: James Hugh Combs, Joe Max Combs, and Wallace Combs.
Pop’s survivors are his nieces, Mandy Hailey (Butch), Jennifer Moore (Tommy), and Mary Ann Briggs (Tom); two nephews, Wally Combs (Hope) and David Combs (Cindy), and one sister-in-law, Mary Lois Combs.
