Marietta Nightingale Unruh was born on September 12, 1944, in Chickasha, OK, to Eben and Ida Koehn Nightingale. She peacefully passed away at Oakwood Manor in Brooksville, MS on June 1, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. While our hearts are broken, we rejoice to know that she has gained her Heavenly home. She spent her early childhood years near Chickasha, OK. At the age of four, her family moved to Crowley, CO, returning to Chickasha six years later. She was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, on March 20, 1958, by Minister Abe Toews. She loved this Church and left a beautiful example for us to follow. She graduated from Verden High School in 1964. She married our dad, Milferd Unruh, on April 19, 1964, and they recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Their first child, Victor, was born in Chickasha, OK. They moved to Mississippi in September 1965, where the rest of their children, four sons and one daughter, were born. Mom worked at the Ole Country Bakery in Brooksville, MS for 15 years. She also served as a church janitor for many years, including cleaning local businesses & residential homes. She enjoyed singing, sewing, baking, feeding & watching birds, and taking care of flowers. She enjoyed her last few months at Oakwood and loved spending time in the coffee shop with her Oakwood family and friends. Mom always put others before herself. She had a heart full of kindness and hands that were always busy making food for others—whether it was a celebration, a gathering, or simply someone in need. Feeding people was her love language, and through it, she brought comfort, joy, and a sense of home to everyone around her. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Milferd, of Brooksville, MS; four sons, Michael and Rhonda, Caledonia, MS; Brent and Deena, Columbus, MS; Trent and Bobbie, Sulligent, AL; Gerald and Marleno, Columbus, MS; one daughter, Melissa, and fiancé Gamaliel Corzo, both of Brooksville, MS; one daughter in law, Mavis, Starkville, MS; seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. She is also survived by her siblings, Gladys and Weldo Unruh, Scott City, KS; Andy and Karen Nightingale, Loveland, CO; Arvilla Humes, Lexington, KY; Elaine Powers, Lewisville, TX; Charlene and Stanley Unruh, Columbus, MS; and Marcella and Stanley Nightingale, Dumas, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two brothers, her parents in law, one brother-in-law, and two sisters in law. We as a family wish to express our appreciation to the Oakwood staff for the exceptional care and support shown to our mother during her sickness. She was so happy to call Oakwood home! We would also like to thank the team of doctors, nurses, and staff at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo and Oncology in Starkville for the care provided to our mother. We would like to thank all those who have provided meals, snacks, prayed, given a hug, or spoken words of encouragement and comfort. These acts of love and kindness shown to our family are appreciated and have helped to ease the pain and heartache of losing our loved one.
