Mr. Leo Hamill, 90, of Macon, MS passed away on May 4, 2026, at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon, MS. A private family service was held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Salem Cemetery near Macon, MS. Memorials may be made to Salem Cemetery Fund, c/o Nick Clark, 7726 Honey Lake Rd., Macon, MS 39341. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Leo Vester Hamill was born on June 17, 1935, to the late Carter Vester and Eula Vera Sanders Hamill in Longview, MS. He and his family moved to the Salem Community, MS. He graduated from Macon High School. After high school, he entered the U.S. Army and completed his basic training at Ft. Chappy, Arkansas, where he and Elvis Presley were in training together at the same time. He then was transferred to Ft, Meade, Maryland, where he met and married Phyllis Kellogg. Leo worked for Dairy Farmers of America as a supply driver and milk hauler until his retirement. He and his grandson, Thomas, also worked at Macon Chevron for a period of time. Leo was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed gardening. He looked forward to the weekends where he watched MSU football and the Dallas Cowboys. Leo was a member of Salem Methodist Church, the church near their home where the family had always attended. Leo is preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Sandy Hamill Denton.

Leo is survived by his wife Phyllis Hamill , a son, Tommy (Kellie) Hamill, son-in-law, George Denton, two daughters, Sherika Yates, Latoria Yates, and a son, Demaruse Yates; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Page and Coleene (Leon) Higginbotham and two brothers, Ralph (Ann) Hamill and Jerry (Betty) Hamill.
