Mrs. Gloria Luke Tubb, 93, of Meridian, MS passed away at Brookdale Memory Care in Meridian, MS on Friday, July 12, 2019. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Shuqualak United Methodist Church in Shuqualak, MS. Interment will follow in Shuqualak Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. until service time Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shuqualak United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 34, Shuqualak, MS 39361 or Poplar Springs Drive United Methodist Church, 3937 Poplar Springs Drive, Meridian, MS 39305. Cockrell Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Gloria was born in her family home in Shuqualak on May 3, 1926 to G.V. and Mary Stokes Luke and attended public school in Shuqualak. She obtained her B.S. in home economics from the Mississippi State College for Women (The “W”) in 1947, where she was a member of Phi Epsilon Omicron, a national honor society in the field of family and consumer services.
Gloria married her longtime sweetheart Jack M. Tubb, Jr. of Jackson on September 4, 1947 before moving to Oxford to teach home economics at Ole Miss while Jack finished his degree. After obtaining her master’s degree in English from the University of Southern Mississippi, Gloria went on to make her mark serving rural communities across central Mississippi as a secondary education teacher in schools in Toccoploa, Nanih Waiya, Louin, Bay Springs, and Macon and as a college instructor at her beloved Jones County Community College( Jones College ). Those who had the privilege of learning under Mrs. Tubb will recall her fondness for diagramming sentences and studying the works of William Faulkner and his fictional Yoknapatawpha County.
When she wasn’t teaching, Gloria equally prized time at her favorite fishing hole on family land in Kemper County and travelling the world, particularly England and Canada, where she fell in love with Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.
Gloria leaves behind two sons: Van (Toni) and Ben (Malinda); five grandchildren: Deanna, Lukas, Katye, Laura and Jackson; and seven great grandchildren, Ana, Logan, Anna Katherine, Dru, Liam, Riley, and Luke. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack; son, Luke and sister, Kathryn.
