Gary Lee Hines, 67, of Macon, MS passed away at his residence, Sunday, October 13, 2024. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Independent Methodist Church, 1177 Washington St., Macon, MS 39341. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 607 W Main, Tupelo, MS 38804, Blair Batson Childrens Hospital, 2500 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39216 or the charity of your choice. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the service arrangements.
Gary Lee Hines was born on September 13, 1957, in Macon, MS, but grew up in Brooksville, MS. His parents were the late Sherrod Morgan “Jiggs” and Sarah Frances Hinkle Hines. He graduated from Central Academy in Macon, MS, Class of 1975 and attended Ole Miss where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Gary worked as a salesman for Chancellor Wholesale for fourteen years. He then moved to Meridian where he owned and operated Hines Grocery for ten years. Afterwards, he moved to Macon where he owned and operated Patterson Corner Mart until he retired. At Pattersons Corner Mart, he was known as “Mr. Patterson”. Gary was married to Dorothy Baker Hines for thirty years. Gary loved everything to do with any kind of sport and really liked playing golf whenever he could. He was especially fond of all Ole Miss sports and Dallas Cowboys football. Gary loved his family and friends and enjoyed cooking and smoking on his grill for them. Gary coached his boys during their Little League years. Gary also enjoyed being at the river. His favorite television program was “The Price is Right”. Gary liked listening to George Strait music, ‘70’s Rock, and the Eagles. Gary attended Independent Methodist Church, Macon and loved his Lord. He was a friend to all and helped those in need.
Gary is survived by his wife, Dorothy Baker Hines of Macon, MS; four sons, Chip (Candice) Hines of Meridian, Drew Hines (Tirza) Corinth, MS, Troy Baker of Jasper, AL and Taft (Lynsey) Baker of Starkville, MS; daughter, Jodie Fortenberry (Doug) of Clinton, MS, a sister, Sherry (Robert) Pilgrim of Brandon, MS, brother, Walter “Bubba” (Melanie) Hines of Brooksville, MS; proud PaPa to twelve grandchildren: Gracey Baker, Jackson Dollar, Ansley Baker, Sophie Hines, Olivia Hines, Arlin Kate Dollar, Sam Hines, Jacob Hines, Baker Fortenberry, Carly Hines, Townes Baker, and Anson Baker, a niece, Holly Harris (Bruce) Laird and their sons, Luke and Cole, and nephew, Ricky Harris.
