Mrs. Evelyn Hill McArthur, 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2025, surrounded by her family. A funeral service is planned for Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel in Macon, MS at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time. Memorials may be made to Pleasant Ridge Cemetery Fund, c/o John C McArthur, P.O. Box 88, Macon, MS or Pine Vale Children’s Home, 1872 Co Rd 700, Corinth, MS 38834. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Evelyn Hill McArthur was born on March 8, 1929, to the late B.F. Hill, Sr. and Winnie Permenter Hill in the Paulette Community of Noxubee County, Mississippi. After graduating from high school, Evelyn earned a business degree and dedicated her professional life as an office manager to both Dr. Morris’, faithfully serving the Morris family for many decades until her passing.

A devoted community member, Evelyn was actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames, the Pilot Club, and the Noxubee County Historical Society. Evelyn was a servant of the Lord and was a lifelong member of the Macon Church of Christ.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John C. "Hooker" McArthur, her parents, her daughter-in-law Stephanie McArthur, five brothers, and one sister.

Evelyn had a deep love for travel and adventure. Her journeys took her across the globe, including destinations like California, Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean, and her beloved New Orleans, where she delighted in sampling the city’s unique cuisine. She also enjoyed visiting New York City to attend Broadway plays and soak in the arts.

Known for her servant’s heart, Evelyn touched countless lives in her community. She visited local nursing homes daily, especially tending to residents who had no family nearby. She went above and beyond, even welcoming strangers into her home—families of accident victims passing through—offering them a place to stay while their loved ones were hospitalized. She also cared for numerous orphans from Sunnybrook, leaving a lasting impact on many children as they grew up in Macon.

Evelyn will be remembered as a compassionate caretaker, a nurturing soul, and a woman who lived a life of quiet, steadfast service to others. Her legacy of kindness and generosity will be cherished by all who knew her.

Evelyn is survived by her three children: Judy McArthur Vernon (Moses) of Oxford, MS, John C McArthur (Bubba) of Aberdeen and Sandy McArthur Rawlings (Jeff) of Madison, MS; eight grandchildren, Lee Dugan (James), Dee Bussanmas (Scott), William Vernon, Courtney Wilson (Brooks), Johnathan McArthur( Beth), Kelly Edwards (Andrew), Alec Rawlings (Laura Jane), Sean Rawlings, (Courtney); sixteen great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren.

Mrs. Evelyn’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Rahman, Pat Campbell, Verna Felton and Enhabit Hospice Staff for the care she received during her illness.

Evelyn will be remembered as a compassionate woman who lived a life of service to others and deep love for her family.
