Mrs. Dorothy Featherston Wilkins, 96, of Brooksville, MS passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at The Windsor Place in Columbus, MS. A private family graveside service was held Friday, September 25, 2020. Memorials may be made to Brooksville Cemetery Fund, c/o Melanie Hines, 586 Hines Rd., Brooksville, MS 39739. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Maria Dorothy Featherston Wilkins was born on July 14, 1924 to the late AL A. and Effie Smith Featherston in Mississippi. She was a graduate of Brooksville High School. Dorothy was of the Baptist faith but attended Brooksville United Methodist Church. In 1957, she married her soul mate T.J Wilkins. She operated Wilkins Dry Goods and clothing store. Dorothy also worked at Five Points Café in Brooksville. She also served a four- year term as Justice of the Peace. Even though she did not have any children of her own, those within her family lovingly called her “D-Dot”. For her pastimes, she enjoyed fishing, playing bingo and going to the casino. She is preceded in death by her husband T. J. Wilkins and brother, Buddy Featherston.
Dorothy’s survivors include: Bill Wilkins, Jr. (Vonnie), who was like the son she never had; 2 nieces: Christina (Robert) Henson and Ceji (Ryan) LeMelle; a nephew: Greg Featherston; and seven grandchildren she called her own: Lakyn Stewart, Garrett Misso, Cannon and soon to be Robert, Henson, Jr. , Lila, Ryan, Jr and Leighton LeMelle.
