Mrs .Amanda E. Bonesteel, 99, of Columbus, MS passed away Friday, May 8, 2015 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 11, 2015 at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon, MS at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jay Spiller officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. There will be no graveside service held at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mashulaville Cemetery, c/o Eddie Gaylord, 38501 Hwy 14, Macon, MS 39341

Mrs. Bonesteel was born on April 28, 1916 to the late John and Sally Lipscomb Fleetwood in Mashulaville, MS. She graduated from Noxubee County AHS in 1934. In 1940, she graduated from Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA as a Registered Nurse. After that, she attended medical college in Richmond, VA and received a certificate in Public Health Education. She worked for two years in Mississippi and then for two years in Virginia as a public health nurse. She was an Air Force Nurses Corps veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict. During World War II, before the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, she was stationed in Wendover Field, Utah where they trained the soldiers to drop the bombs. She personally knew many of the men in the flight crews involved in that bombing operation. During the Korean Conflict, she was a flight nurse who helped to fly wounded soldiers from California to hospitals and care centers all over the United States. After the Korean Conflict ended, she worked for the Veterans Administration in various places and retired from the VA in Cheyenne, WY in 1976. In 1962, she married Maynard J. Bonesteel in Cheyenne, WY and they made their home there for the next 35 years. Mrs. Bonesteel moved to Trinity United Methodist Senior Services in Columbus, MS in 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994as well as by two sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
